Worst Comment Ever Directed at Something You Wrote

Okay guys -- fess up. What was the worst comment you ever received about something you wrote? I'll start -- mine came from a member of my writer's group. After reading a chapter about how my main character met his girlfriend, he proclaimed,

"The dialogue sounds like porn movie dialogue".

I've now re-written that chapter about 16 billion times (:

So what's the worst comment you ever got?

David Kuehls in "Fangoria." It seemed to be written to display how clever he could be in trashing a book. He wove a whole theme based on Star Trek V through the review and made fun of the main character's name even though the narrative explained why his mom saddled him with that name.

Kuehls savaged works by Richard Laymon, Dean Koontz etc. so I was in a pretty good club.

Not that I hold a grudge or anything. :-)

From Marion Zimmer Bradley, concerning a story I submitted to her anthology. "At this length a story has to be truly excellent or truly original. This was neither."

You know, nobody would have compared anything I wrote to porn. I would have accepted it as a compliment.

The worst feedback I ever received was from a Christian woman who read a short story of mine entitled "God". She said: "God has a place for people like you. You have no idea what you write about."

If God is reading my stuff, I'm actually a little flattered. If the Almighty would take the time from his busy schedule to actually do something to give me a hand, even better.

Sid,

Oh man, that sucks... If he really were clever, he'd be writing his own novel...

Charles,

Ouch. She sounds jaded. I'm suspect about writers who spend so much time editing...

Stewart,

Porn, yeah. Porn dialog? Not so much!

As for the holier than thou comment, that doesn't count. That would have made me laugh!

I once tried writing actual porn... only to be told by some kind emailer that it had too much dialogue, wasn't sexy enough and was generally pointless.

About Me

My photo
This is me and one of my two cats. His name is Cougar, and he’s an F1 Chausie. A chausie is a new breed of cat under development. Chausies are the result of a cross between a domestic cat (in Cougar’s case, a Bengal) and a jungle cat (Felis Chaus). Cougar’s mom is 8 pounds and his father is a 30-pound jungle cat. He’s about 16 pounds, super intelligent, spirited, and toilet trained. A writer without a cat (or two) is not to be trusted.
