Chris Baty of National Novel Writing Month fame is cool. Very cool. I feel very lucky to have made his acquaintance for many reasons, but I'll leave that list for another time.
Let's just say that Chris is the real deal. His National Novel Writing Month success, which led to his charitable organization, is worth your attention even if you don't ever intend to spend every waking hour in November plunking out prose.
Anyway, one of the coolest things about Nanowrimo is the community aspect. The fact that when you embark on this challenge, unlike most writing endeavors, you don't do it alone. I've met some cool people and made some valuable friends along the way.
So, what's the headline all about? Got an e-mail from Chris the other day and he's implementing "The Year of Doing Big, Fun, Scary Things Together" on the Nano site in the forums. It's all about making a list of those things that you've wanted to do or accomplish and posting that list and progress reports for others to see. The hope is that along the way, you may find others on the board who may be able to help you or encourage you in reaching your goal.
Wow. Simple idea, worthy goal.
It's funny, while there's no doubt the Internet is a power to be reckoned with, and probably the most significant development of the 20th century, I think we sometimes forget how easy it is to harness the potential good in each other, and direct it, with sites like this.
So, what's on your list of big, fun, scary accomplishments for 2008?
