I didn’t get the job!

Okay, I knew that I wasn’t going to get the job as soon as I saw their listing sans agency, but as a job hunter, the LEAST I deserve is confirmation. So yesterday morning, I e-mailed the recruiter to see if he’d heard (since, I was told I’d get their decision on Tuesday). Three hours later, when he still hadn’t replied, I called the contact directly and asked. Of course, she didn’t remember me and had to go check, then said simply that “unfortunately, you weren’t selected”. Okay, I was very close to asking if it had anything to do with their decision to go without an agency and lower the amount they were offering SIGNIFICANTLY. But I didn’t.

My biggest pet peeve? Hiring managers and folks who don’t bother to inform you of their decisions. Even after TAKING A FREAKING TEST!!! If I give them that kind of time, the LEAST they can do is thank me.

Arrggh! Moving on…

P.S. I think I’ll hop on the bus and head for Tartine’s this morning. Heh.

How unprofessional is that! I remember when I was frantically looking for a job this semester I reapplied to one of the previous convenience stores I worked at...in fact it was the one I worked at for 3+ years. The lady that owns it used to be one of my co-workers. I didn't get the job and waited and waited to hear from her after she told me that she was going to be getting rid of this one girl that wasn't working out and she'd call me soon to let me know when to start. She never called. Now I know convenience stores aren't "professional" but it's ridiculous for potential employers to hold you waiting for so long and then not tell you that you weren't selected. CRAZY PEOPLE!

Thanks guys...I was hoping I wasn't beginning to sound like a crybaby. Heh. Anyway, this is a major pet peeve of mine.

Anyway, Minda, you're experience is NOT unusual in the "professional" world...not at all. I don't know if it's because people don't like to give bad news, so they just don't, or what. But when I go in and take a FREAKING TEST as part of the process, the LEAST they can do is get back to me. Weren't they once in the same boar? Okay, rant over (:

I'm not defending them, but I've been on the other side of this situation, and it makes me crazy. We were hiring here recently, and I was in charge of contacting the candidates and setting up the interviews with a whole team of people...who were impossible to schedule all together...anyway it dragged on and on. They didn't like anyone in the first batch so started a whole new round of interviewing, but didn't want me to contact anyone from the first batch, just in case they didn't find anyone better! It went on for months, I felt like a total asshole, and I couldn't do anything about it.

That said--reposting the job at a different salary and still not contacting you is just lame.

Calendula,

I hear what you're saying, and that's equally wrong, but in a different way. I guess a "There's been a delay in the hiring process...we'll get back to you as soon as possible" e-mail might have been the way to go...but that's a bad place to be in. I only interviewed with one person, and they obviously decided to go without the agency, so I can't come up with an excuse for them. They're dicks.

Clearly you have to pack your bags, move to Mumbai, and wait for somebody to grab you as part of an outsourcing move.

CLEARLY!

@Carlos,

Thanks man for that moment of clarity. But the tickets are damn expensive. I need a job first, so I can afford the move.

Wow! That was very lame, and rude. Don't despair though, something will pop out of the woodwork.

Archiwiz,

Thanks...appreciated.

I hate to hear that, but hopefully things will come around

About Me

My photo
This is me and one of my two cats. His name is Cougar, and he’s an F1 Chausie. A chausie is a new breed of cat under development. Chausies are the result of a cross between a domestic cat (in Cougar’s case, a Bengal) and a jungle cat (Felis Chaus). Cougar’s mom is 8 pounds and his father is a 30-pound jungle cat. He’s about 16 pounds, super intelligent, spirited, and toilet trained. A writer without a cat (or two) is not to be trusted.
