My Cats

It's cold in San Francisco this morning and my cats are fighting again. Cougar and Fenix had a cataclysmic battle about 4 months ago that left my happy home in shambles. They're slowly, day-by-day, getting over it, but it's been hell I tell you. Pure hell.

This picture is one of my favorites. That's Fenix in the foreground, and his grumpy, older brother Cougar in the rear.

My cats get along perfectly. Until about 4 a.m. most mornings. Yep, my oldest male, Monty, is currently locked in my office with me because he won't stop pestering Daisy. Ironically we originally got Monty because we felt Daisy needed some company.

Yeah, they can be amazingly inscrutable sometimes. My cats have been buddies, since, well, forwever! And now this! I was there where it happend -- in the other room. They were having one of their daily spats (Cougar is moody) that generally lasted all of 10 seconds...this one kept going, and escalating, until they were litterally SCREAMING at each other. When I went to see what was up, they exploded into a ball of flailing legs and high pitched screams...I ran and got water. Didn't work. Ended up having to use a CHAIR to separate them, and push Cougar into the bedroom. I have French doors with sheer curtains, so for the first month, they hung out at the doors and everytime they saw each other they growled until they screamed!!! I was soo close to getting rid of one of them...but every day one of them would go into "I love you mode" and I knew I couldn't do it. Now, about 4 months down the road, we've worked up to the point where they can be togehter for 2-3 hours at a time. They groom each other, and get along fairly well, then one of them looks at the other the wrong way, and it's on! A couple months back I was resigned to the fact that they would never get back together (though they wanted to see each other). Last month, on my birthday of all days, they made a MAJOR improvement. All at once... Strange. I do have to separate them at night though -- one sleeps with me in the bedroom while the other has the living room...

About Me

My photo
This is me and one of my two cats. His name is Cougar, and he’s an F1 Chausie. A chausie is a new breed of cat under development. Chausies are the result of a cross between a domestic cat (in Cougar’s case, a Bengal) and a jungle cat (Felis Chaus). Cougar’s mom is 8 pounds and his father is a 30-pound jungle cat. He’s about 16 pounds, super intelligent, spirited, and toilet trained. A writer without a cat (or two) is not to be trusted.
