Last night, rather impulsively, I went to see “Let the Right One In”, a foreign vampire flick about a young, slightly odd boy and the girl he falls for, who turns out to be a vampire. This flick was recommended to me by a friend, and I’d heard murmurs about it, so I was primed for an interesting and different take on the vampire theme.
It is both those things, though many of the tropes are on display (i.e., inability to live in sunlight, need to be asked in, etc.). The characters are all quirky, including our hero, so the events take place at an emotional distance that dampens the impact a bit, but still manages to maintain interest. While there are a couple of fairly gruesome scenes, this is a slow-paced story, often more interested in telling a story about two kids who need each other, the loss of innocence, etc., than creeping you out.
Definitely worth a look.

Thanks for the recommendation. I'm always on the lookout for good vampire entertainment.
Ah, then you'll definitely like it. Different, though includes some of the stuff you want in a vampire picture. I'm still waiting for a big screen adaption of Vampirella. Heh.
